The Crucible Essay

In the town of Salem, Massachusetts 1692, where madness was at a
peek, talk of the devil was in the air and neighbors were accusing each other
of witchcraft, evil found its home.   However when dealing with the madness,
it is hard to put the blame on a single soul because everybody was
responsible in their own way.   But of all of Salem three people stand out the
most: the Negro slave from Barbados named Tituba, the strict and loyal
Governor Danforth, and the orphan girl Abigail.   These three show that their
actions cause a lot of pain and panic in Salem.

Tituba is in her early forties and was brought to Salem by Rev. Parris
as a slave.   After the teenage girls were being questioned about all of them
dancing naked in the woods Abigail was quick to put the blame Tituba.

“Abigail, it may be your cousin is dying.   Did you call the
devil last night?”
“I never called him!   Tituba, Tituba….”       Pg.42

Tituba then confesses to compacting with the devil and starts the witch-hunt
in Salem by telling Mr. Hale that she had seen 4 people with devil. She then
further involves herself by admitting that the devil called out to her.
“He say Mr. Parris must be kill!   Mr. Parris no goodly
man, Mr. Parris mean man and no gentle man, and he bid
me rise out of my bed and cut your throat!   But I tell him
“No!   I don’t hate that man.   I don’t want to kill that man.”
But he say, “You work for me, Tituba, and I make you free!
I give you pretty dress to wear, and put you way high up in
the air, and you gone fly back to Barbados!” And then he
come one stormy night to me, and he say, “Look!   I have
white people belong to me.” And I look----and there was
Goody Good.” Pg. 47

These words caused Panic throughout Salem, and now the court was out to
Persecute anybody that was accused and did not confess.
